FAQ

Questions? We have answers

Everything people usually ask us about koi ponds, water features and keeping koi healthy in South Florida.

Koi ponds & water features

Do you build new koi ponds or only maintain existing ones?

Both. We design koi ponds and water features, and our sister company, Firefly Landscape Contractors LLC, handles the construction. Once your pond is running, we can stock it with koi and take care of ongoing maintenance.

How big should a koi pond be?

Koi grow large, so they need room. As a starting point we recommend at least 1,000 gallons and a depth of 3 feet or more for a small group of koi. Bigger is easier to keep stable. We size every pond around the number of fish you want and the filtration it will have.

Will you maintain a pond or fountain you didn’t build?

Yes. We service existing ponds, fountains and waterfalls, including cleaning, filter service, pump checks and water testing. If something isn’t working well, we can recommend upgrades.

How often does a koi pond need maintenance?

Most ponds do well with a monthly visit, plus seasonal deeper cleanings. Ponds with heavy fish loads, lots of trees nearby or a lot of sun may need more frequent care. We’ll suggest a schedule that fits your pond.

Why is my pond water green or cloudy?

Usually it’s algae fed by sunlight and extra nutrients, or a filter that is too small or needs cleaning. Too many fish and overfeeding make it worse. Proper filtration, a UV clarifier, shade from plants and the right feeding routine typically bring the water back to clear.

Koi care & buying koi

Where do your koi come from?

We offer authentic Japanese koi. We’re happy to talk through varieties, sizes and what is currently available. Just give us a call or send a message.

How many koi can I put in my pond?

It depends on the pond’s volume and filtration, and on how big the fish will grow. Overstocking is the most common cause of pond problems, so we plan the number of fish with you and leave room for them to grow.

Can koi live in the South Florida heat?

Yes. Koi do very well here when the pond is built for our climate. Warm water holds less oxygen, so we focus on depth, shade, strong aeration and filtration that can handle koi eating year-round.

How long do koi live?

With good water and care, koi commonly live 25 to 35 years, and some live much longer. Many owners think of their koi as lifelong pets.

Can I add koi to a pond that already has fish?

Usually, yes, as long as the pond has the space and filtration for more fish. New koi should be introduced carefully to protect the fish you already have. We can help plan and handle the process.

Working with SevenKOI

What areas do you serve?

We work across Miami-Dade County and Collier County and nearby South Florida communities, including Naples, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Pinecrest, South Miami, Homestead, Pembroke Pines, Dania Beach.

What should I do with my pond before a hurricane?

Plan ahead: lower the water level a few inches to allow for heavy rain, secure or bring in loose décor and equipment, and have a plan for aeration if the power goes out. We can help prepare your pond before a storm and check on it afterward.
